Barcelona atNight

atNight is an exploration on how Barcelona’s identity and perception change between night and day, through analysis of user generated content from various social networks.

Some fascinating visual aspects were chosen to represent the information on the maps: data lights up the city as in a satellite nightscape, blocks look like neon signs, dots seem flooding the streets, or the whole city becomes an x-ray scan. In most visualisations the map is barely visible, yet the shapes of blocks and streets sharply emerge from the distribution of the data.

atNight project aims to raise questions about the configuration of nocturnal identity. What elements and values define our nightscapes? What is the relationship between the city we perceive during day-time and its nocturnal identity? Taking Barcelona as a paradigm, we have represented different aspects of the city organization by night in order to approach the structure of nightscapes.
